Basics and Trends in Cloud Networking 2018

Cloud networking or network cloud computing is a concept that refers to the access of networking resources (software or data) from a centralized provider via Internet-based access technologies. It provides control, visibility, and centralized management of the network, with the aim of leveraging Internet connections and centralized management to manage secure private networks.

The concept of cloud computing refers to centralized computing resources being shared for customers. In cloud computing, both the computing resources and the network can be shared. Tech leaders have started pushing more network management functions into the cloud, so we need fewer devices to manage the network. Firewalls, bandwidth, routers, and management software are all virtual, coming from the cloud (whether private, public, or hybrid).

Network Cloud Computing is Changing Traditional Networking

With cloud computing gaining more and more traction, people around the globe need secure and reliable access to their applications and data. According to this report by BetterCloud, about $70 million in spending moved from on-premise software to cloud services (by 2020, SaaS will grow by 37%). Cloud computing, in general, is unimaginable without a quality network access, which creates new challenges for IT leaders.

As for security, organizations are more vulnerable to cyber-attacks with their apps moving to the cloud. A secure digital perimeter authenticates a user before allowing access to the network, based on who the user is, what device they’re on, and where they’re located. It is also critical to gain analysis of users, apps, devices and end-to-end visibility across the network.

SD-WAN

Software-defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is still at the center of attention while we wait for software-defined networking to be widely adopted. SD-WAN allows users to manage various types of connections – from broadband to Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) to LTE. It is not an architecture, like SDN, but software that you can buy. Making changes to network configs in branch offices was difficult in the past because it required an on-site technician to perform manual configurations. With SD-WAN, the entire WAN is easy to change and manage, as it allows its users to shape and control the bandwidth at each location through a GUI. SD-WAN is an important trend in cloud networking because it is a new networking service designed to support the current consumption model of apps most efficiently.

Cloud Network Security

During the last year, there were more cyber-attacks registered than ever before in history. In 2018, we expect to see more attacks but also more sophisticated security systems in public, private and government sectors. Cyber attackers will continue to undermine cloud systems, so organizations need to recognize how important is to keep investing in tools like malware detection systems and SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) as a basic defense mechanism against cyber breaches.
